South Sydney Rabbitohs and their fans spotted at Park Sydney

Sydney, 22 August 2017

Greenland Australia hosted a membership signing event for the South Sydney Rabbitohs outside the Park Sydney display suite in Erskineville on Saturday, 12 August. NSW representative halfback Adam Reynolds, Rugby League Players Association Rookie of the Year Cody Walker and English International star forward George Burgess mingled with the crowd, took selfies and signed autographs for their many fans.

The Park Sydney joint venture is proud to be major sponsor of the South Sydney District Rugby League Referees Association for 2017-19. Their members, most of whom are school students, flipped sausages on the BBQ and sold cold drinks as a fundraiser. Many of the referees play rugby league themselves, so they too were wowed by the star players.

Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly and Chief Commercial Offer Shannon Donato, also attended the community event, and Shannon spoke about why Park Sydney’s sponsorship of the referees is so important:

“Greenland Australia is a great supporter of our junior referees. They are actually their major sponsor. It’s important the referees are supported because they facilitate the game for three and a half thousand local juniors. Being here today is our way of thanking Greenland and introducing their magnificent site to the local community.”

The inflatable field and Reggie’s Pass the Ball game kept the kids happy, and the Rabbitohs promotions team gave away free passes, caps, stickers and posters. Face painting also proved popular.

Becoming a junior referee requires dedication and hard work. The Level 1 referee course consists of three components: 10 online modules (The Referee, Laws of the Game, Signal & Whistles, Role of the Touch judge, Fitness for officiating, Pre-Match, Match & Post Match Considerations, Practical Refereeing Theory, Management & Communication, Attitudes – Personal Qualities, Safety- Maintaining a proper environment); Face to face modules (overview of the above modules); and Practical Assessment (three on-field assessments).

After completing the online and face-to-face component of the course, the candidate qualifies as a ‘Referee in Training’ which enables them to referee the relevant age groups for a period of 18 months. During this time the candidate is required to undergo a practical assessment. If the candidate is deemed competent they will be officially accredited as a Level 1 Referee. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
